New Heart and Spirit

Far more frequently than I like to admit I come across a scripture that is powerfully relevant and "new" to me. I honestly don't have any recollection of having read this before:

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh, I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." Ezekiel 36:26-27

This scripture struck me because I usually think of Jesus and the New Testament being the instruments of making us "new." Yet this is an Old Testament book. It reminds me that God's spirit was present and at work forever - past, present and future.

The thought that God will put his Spirit in me and cause me to obey his law is very freeing - it is a continuing reminder that I cannot do this by myself. That I need to let God change me from the inside - as God changes my heart, my behavior will change.

I love that verse! I first came across it in a Beth Moore study, and loved the idea of my hard heart of stone being replaced with a tender heart of flesh.
